OUR MISSION
Helping people feel healthier, more positive and confident about their future.
At Sangat Centre, we bring people together, support wellbeing and create opportunities to learn, grow and reach their full potential.
OUR VISION
A connected community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
We want everyone in Keighley to feel valued, included and able to contribute — whatever their background or circumstances.
OUR PURPOSE
Building a Keighley where everyone feels they belong.
We build on strong community relationships to create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to connect, grow and thrive. Together, we can create a healthier, more inclusive and connected Keighley.
OUR STORY
From a small community initiative to a thriving hub for Keighley
For more than 30 years, The Sangat Centre has grown alongside the people and communities of Keighley.
Our story began with a group of local residents who saw a need and decided to do something about it. Today, that same community spirit continues to shape everything we do.
Sangat Community Centre was established by local residents in Emily Street, Keighley.
At the time, many people from the local South Asian community faced barriers when accessing mainstream services. Language, cultural differences and a lack of appropriate support often made it difficult for people to get the help they needed. Sangat was created to bridge that gap.
1. Advice & Support
Helping people overcome language barriers and navigate welfare, immigration and
local services.
2. Older People
Providing culturally sensitive social day care, exercise, health advice, activities and
opportunities for older people to meet and connect.
3. Young People
Providing weekend study support, youth work, teaching and volunteering to help
tackle educational underachievement and give young people the opportunity to
succeed.
Our first three priorities
Where it all began
Five years after we began, Sangat moved to our current home on Marlborough Street.
The move marked an important stage in our development. What began as a small local initiative was becoming an increasingly important part of community life in Keighley with a dynamic and diverse range of activties to meet local needs.
Communities were changing, and so were the challenges people faced.
The decline of the local textile and manufacturing industries had a significant impact on many families. Unemployment, poverty, poor health, educational inequality and social isolation became increasingly important issues. Sangat continued to listen and respond.
Our work expanded beyond the needs we were originally established to address, developing new activities, partnerships and support to help people build better futures.
A new home.
Responding to change
community centre to local hub
A community space for everyone
Much more than just a place to access services.
It became a place to meet, connect, learn, participate and belong. We expanded our work across health and wellbeing, education, skills, training, advice, employment, volunteering and community participation.
We also began working increasingly closely with trusted organisations and partners, bringing diverse expertise and skills together to provide enhanced opportunities and support for local people.
Still growing. Still listening. Still making a difference.
Our roots are firmly planted in Keighley, but our vision is about the future. As our community continues to change, we will continue to evolve with it —developing new ideas, building strong partnerships and creating opportunities that make a genuine difference to peoples lives.
